Construction Weekly Update

Construction company consolidation, cash flow and highways update

Construction companies to join together

A big question that has been posed for the construction industry in recent years is whether we will see the consolidation of larger companies.

Fragmentation and the high number of competing firms have been pinpointed as one of the reasons why margins remain so low.

If you want to build a school, office or hotel, there is no shortage of firms who can do the job and the services they offer.

Would this be helped if larger companies were to merge together?

Construction cash flow

Prompt payments is key for the UK economy.

Interim Small Business commissioner Philip King said:

Prompt payment practice is vital in providing healthy cashflow to smaller businesses to help them survive and this is one of the most important factors that will enable the UK economy to recover quickly as we come out of the pandemic.

Highways

Highways England is going to carry out market engagement on its A66 Northern TransPennine project.

The job was assigned a £1bn value by the government when announced last year but was valued at £771m in a prior information notice released late last week.
