What types of crushed concrete do you stock?
There is more than one type of crushed concrete and MOT. We stock all the popular types and we can deliver them at a time that suits you.
Recycled Type 1 MOT and 6F2 Recycled Aggregate are the only aggregates that we sell that are by-products of existing construction sites. The other MOT products that we stock are sourced from quarries.
Type 1 MOT
MOT Type 1 is often referred to as MOT Type 1 Hardcore or even Department of Transport Type 1. When materials have MOT in the title, they meet the standards set out by the Ministry of Transport for a compact sub base.
So, what is MOT Type 1?
Type 1 is the most popular crushed material that we sell. This aggregate is typically comprised of limestone and granite. The materials range from dust to 40mm.
Type 1 is perfect for people who want long-lasting sub bases. The larger pieces of material form a strong basis for building. The smaller pieces fill the remaining crevices and compact over time. By combining small and large pieces of strong materials, builders can create robust sub bases that have excellent load-bearing qualities.
Recycled Type 1 MOT
Recycled Type 1 has the same excellent load-bearing properties as Type 1. It contains pieces of brick and concrete that are also graded from 40mm down to dust.
As the name suggests, Recycled MOT Type 1 is sourced from existing sites. No extra fumes are released during the manufacturing process because it is a by-product. This kind of MOT is sustainable and better for the environment. It is perfect for people who want to purchase durable, construction materials without impacting their carbon footprint.
Because Recycled MOT Type 1 is a by-product, it contains other materials. Customers can expect to find fragments of other materials in their deliveries. Other materials can include limestone and granite.
MOT Type 2 Clean
So, what does MOT Type 2 stand for?
MOT Type 2 is sometimes called Type 2 Clean. It is sourced from quarries. It is called clean because a lot of the fine dust is filtered out. 40mm pieces of limestone or granite remain.
We recommend this type of MOT for people who need permeable materials. It is good for drainage systems. Other types of MOT that contain dust particles would clog the systems.
6F5 and 6F2 Recycled Aggregates 75mm
6F2 Recycled Aggregates are also called 6F5 Recycled Aggregates. The terms are used interchangeably to refer to inorganic hardcore materials. This aggregate product is a by-product of demolition. Crushed brick, concrete, and other aggregates are included in the mix. The particles range from 75mm to dust.
Recycled 6F2 is recommended for bulk fill tasks. It is perfect for base layers and for forming compact areas for structures.
Screened Recycled Type 1 40mm
40mm screening is excavated from quarries.
Concrete floor screening is a popular choice for professionals who want strong floors. Screening is typically laid under concrete patios, paving, and walkways.
Screened Crushed Concrete 75mm
This type of screened crushed concrete contains 75mm pieces.
Concrete screening compacts very well, which makes it perfect for base layers. Screening concrete floors that are four to six inches thick are very sturdy. Builders and homeowners in Hertfordshire typically spread a layer of sand on top of their screening to create smooth, level surfaces.

What can I use crushed concrete for?
With different sizes and products to choose from, it can be difficult to find the right type of crushed aggregate. Our crushed aggregates are made up of limestone, granite, brick, and concrete. We sell lots of popular MOT aggregates.
Crushed concrete has a wide range of applications. It is used in lots of types of construction projects. It often replaces limestone materials because it has the same long-lasting properties at a fraction of the price.
20mm crushed concrete is perfect for sub bases. This type of concrete has multiple uses. One of the biggest benefits of 20mm concrete is that it fills in the gaps between larger pieces of concrete. The result is a strong, long-lasting structure.
MOT Type 1 Sub Base has brilliant load-bearing qualities. We recommend this for driveways, car parks, motorways and more.
Recycled Type 1 MOT is best suited to construction professionals who want to use recycled materials that are a fraction of the cost of primary aggregates.
MOT Type 2 does not contain dust particles. It is perfect for drainage systems and other construction projects that would not benefit from loose, small particles.
6F2 Recycled Aggregate and 6F5 Recycled Aggregate are made for bulk fill projects. Motorways, driveways, car parks, and all types of other construction projects benefit from 6F2 and 6F5. Contractors in Hertfordshire regularly use Recycled 6F2 and 6F5 for construction projects.
Will crushed concrete compact?
Recycled Type 1 MOT, MOT Type 2 Sub Base, and any other MOT type will compact over time. The height of the base will also decrease. This is an important consideration for builders who are creating driveways, motorways, and sub bases for large structures.
It is difficult to predict how much height crushed aggregate bases will lose over time. The best way to combat this problem is to add another layer or two of concrete each year to maintain the required qualities.
How to spread crushed concrete?
There are lots of things to consider before you begin spreading MOT. It does not matter whether you have MOT Type 2 or 6F2 Recycled Aggregate. You need to undertake preparation work to get the outcome that you desire.
Let’s use a driveway sub base as an example.
- Excavate the area.
- Lay landscaping fabric. Landscaping fabric is one of the often overlooked yet essential parts of preparation work. The fabric can be anything from geotextile cloth to tailor-made landscaping fabric. This type of fabric is made from permeable mesh. It can filter, reinforce, drain, protect, or separate materials. One of the biggest benefits of this type of fabric is that it reduces the chance of weeds.
- Spread your base layer. Base layers should consist of larger pieces of crushed concrete. The base layer needs to be level so that the following layer is level.
- Spread MOT across the even base layer.
- Place a wacker plate over the MOT. This stops air from travelling through loose pieces of aggregates to the sub base.
- We recommend creating a slight peak at the centre of the driveway. This will combat drainage issues in the future.
Does crushed concrete drain?
Crushed stones have a range of uses. When professionals spread crushed stones as a sub base, the result is very compact. In this case, crushed concrete is not completely permeable or impermeable. It forms a strong, compact layer of sub material.
When a material is used as a loose-fill product, water will drain through it. MOT Type 2 does not contain particles and is especially permeable.
Will crushed concrete harden?
Crushed concrete aggregate will harden over time. It is made from sturdy stones that have closed-cell structures. MOT types that contain particles will be stronger and harder than those that do not. With Type 1 MOT sub bases, the particles fill in the gaps and create an overall stronger structure.
Some builders are disappointed to find that crushed concrete does not achieve the same hardness as poured concrete. It is also nowhere near as smooth as poured concrete.
Is crushed concrete toxic?
When it comes to construction materials, it is important to be aware of health hazards. Crushed concrete is made by grinding concrete together to create particles of different sizes. During this process, particles are released into the air.
Breathing in dust particles can be a hazard to health. Long-term exposure to dust particles can lead to conditions and health problems. Customers who use the correct PPE do not have to worry about health hazards from dust. Our staff use PPE to avoid dust exposure.
