What is ready mix concrete?
Ready mix concrete is a combination of sand, cement, stone, and water. Construction industry professionals sometimes call it ready made concrete.
It is known for being customisable. Contractors tell us which concrete grades and strengths they need and we pack them at our batching plant.
Each material goes into one of our volumetric concrete trucks. They travel to construction sites all over Bedfordshire, North London, and Essex.

How do you measure the strength of concrete?
Ready mix concrete goes into lots of construction projects. Industrial buildings, bridges, and residential slabs depend on the materials we supply.
Measuring the strength of concrete is one of the ways that site managers can create a safe environment.
Scientists take samples from existing concrete batches. They place them in specialist compression equipment. This equipment measures the strength of ready mix concrete in pounds per square inch (psi).
Different construction sites need a range of concrete strengths. With our volumetric concrete trucks, you can have lots of strengths delivered at once.
Contractors need concrete strengths between 15MPa (2200 psi) and 30 MPa (4400 psi).
Are there quality standards for concrete?
Concrete is one of the most common construction materials in the world. It goes into large industrial buildings and bridges. There are lots of different quality standards for ready mix concrete.
At HH Muckers, we never let quality standards slip.
Our standards start at the batching plant. Our team performs void, density, and moisture tests on all the materials we use. That way, we can make sure you get premium materials that fulfil your project.

How long do I have to place and finish the concrete?
With our ready mix concrete delivery slots, it has never been easier to plan your working day.
It is important to make sure that concrete is pliable. One of the easiest ways to keep ready mix concrete pliable is to put in place time controls.
When concrete is left for too long it becomes difficult to work with. Harsh winds and immense heat can also make concrete less pliable.
Our volumetric concrete trucks deliver concrete seven days a week. This means that contractors can meet deadlines with ease.
What is the difference between concrete and cement?
Cement and concrete both go into large construction projects.
Cement is a vital part of concrete. It is an ingredient of concrete and combines with sand, gravel, and stone. It is an important part of the hardening process and binds to whatever it is touching.
Portland and Asphalt are two of the most popular types of cement. They go into construction sites across Bedfordshire.
How do you measure concrete?
We measure ready mix concrete by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.
Does concrete gain strength by drying out?
Ready mix concrete gets stronger and dries out when hydration occurs. Hydration is a chemical reaction that occurs when water combines with sand, stone, and cement.
Water molecules collide with the other molecules in ready mix concrete. These molecules lock into strong bonds and crystalise. When the bonds have crystalised, ready mix concrete begins to take its shape.
The more bonds that form, the less moisture there is in the mixture.
Hydration occurs in the first month, which is why most batches of concrete will be dry after a month. Hydration happens whenever moisture is present. This is why hydration takes place months and years after the initial chemical reaction.
How long does it take for concrete to cure?
Concrete dries and cures at different rates. The drying process depends on a chemical reaction. In contrast, curing concrete requires external controls.
Most batches of ready mix concrete will cure after around a month.
Contractors need to consider heat, weather, and humidity. We recommend creating an environment of over 50 degrees. This needs to be maintained for 3 to 14 days depending on the type of construction project.
It is also important to create and maintain an environment of relative humidity above 80%.
At HH Muckers, we work with clients all over Bedfordshire, Essex, and North London. We know that each construction site is different, and each batch takes a different amount of time to cure.
For specific information, call your engineers and contractors.
What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?
Our clients work on lots of different projects. When it comes to residential slabs, they choose C35 and above mixes.
Our volumetric concrete trucks come with separate compartments. This means that they can carry lots of different concrete grades and strengths. You can order all the materials you need in the same time slot.
For tailored concrete grade and strength information, always speak to your engineers.
Why is my concrete cracking already?
Cracks are natural.
All types of concrete develop cracks. A chemical reaction called hydration causes cracks. Hydration begins when water molecules form strong bonds with sand, stone, cement molecules.
It causes contractions and shrinkage. Hydration happens whenever there is moisture in ready mix concrete. This means that concrete will always expand and contract. Concrete shrinks an average of an ⅛ of an inch for every 20 feet.
Poor building practices can cause excess cracks.
- Adding excess water to sand, gravel, and cement makes the mixture easier to work with. It also causes excess hydration, which leads to cracks.
- Labourers who work on the surface of concrete too early can cause defects. Wait until your batch of ready mix concrete is cured before working on it.
We recommend adding one expansion joint to every three metres of concrete. Doing so gives the mixture a structure, which helps when contraction happens.

Can you advise me on what type of concrete to order?

Our experienced team provides contractors with general information where appropriate.
What is screed?
Floor screed is one of the most popular construction materials that we sell. It is a very simple material; it only contains sand, water, and cement.
Contractors in Bedfordshire contact us for quick, hassle-free screed delivery services. The best thing about our screed is that it is customisable. If you need bigger pieces of sand in your mixture, just let us know. We stock sand that ranges from dust to 10mm.
What is screed used for?
Screed has lots of applications, but here are the most common.
- Top layer for sub bases – It is not unusual for floor screeding to go on top of concrete sub bases. Concrete is a sturdy material, but it is not smooth. Screed is a simple yet effective solution to this problem. HH Muckers’ screed creates even, blemish-free layers.
- Base layers for floors – Screed creates such smooth surfaces that it is even a base layer for floors. Contractors install tiles, carpet, and linoleum on top of our screed.
- Insulation for pipes – Screed is an affordable option for people who want to insulate their underfloor heating pipes.
Are concrete and screed floors different?
Screed floors are very different to concrete floors, even though concrete only contains one more ingredient.
Screed is a thin material that creates thin floors. These floors have even, smooth surfaces.
Concrete is far thicker. It is good for beams, pillars, and any other structure that has to hold a lot of weight.

Types of floor screed
There are two types of floor screed that you need to know about.
The first is traditional screed. We sell thousands of cubic metres of this type every month. It is a simple mixture that contains cement, water, and sand. It creates smooth surfaces without fail.
The second is reinforced screed. It contains metal mesh fibres, cement, water, and sand. The fibres reduce the chance that screed will crack or shrink when it dries. It is ideal for contractors who want added protection.
How to screed a floor?
HH Muckers’ floor screeding is easy to use. You do not need lots of expensive equipment. Just buy a screed float and a carborundum stone from any major supply shop.
Screed floats are the only tool you need to smooth out screed. Run the flat edge across the surface of your screed to create a blemish-free layer.
You might notice that the float leaves some marks on your screed. To remove the scuff marks, run a carborundum stone over the surface.
How do I cure screed?
Screed floors require patience and planning. It is not as simple as just leaving your floor to dry. The conditions in the room have to be conducive to curing. You need to think about heat, humidity, and the type of screed that you have. For example, if the temperature in the room is below 10°C, your screed will struggle to cure.
One of the ways that you can speed up the process is by using a polythene sheet. Pull the sheet over your screed and make sure that it is airtight.
How long does screed take to dry?
As a rule of thumb, HH Muckers’ concrete screed dries at a rate of 1mm per day.
Layers that are thicker than 50mm will take longer. We recommend adding an extra day for each 1mm over 50mm. For example, a layer that is 60mm could take anywhere from 60 to 70 days to dry completely.
Can I cancel my order?
We accommodate cancellations 24 hours or more before your initial delivery slot.
