How our volumetric concrete mixers work

Our volumetric concrete trucks are brand new and fully licensed. They have separate compartments for different construction materials. Our trucks carry ballast, screed, lean, cement, stone, and sand.

One of the main benefits of ordering a truck is that they contain in-built mixers. They mix the materials together whilst on-site. They can produce 1 to 10 cubic metres of concrete on each site visit.

What is ready mix concrete?

Ready mix concrete is a type of volumetric concrete. It contains gravel, sand, cement, and water. The materials combine, form strong bonds, and become ready mix concrete.

Contractors all over Chelmsford and North London use our services. We offer a wide range of concrete strengths and grades. Ordering from us takes the hassle away from your construction site. You can finish lots of projects on the same day with multiple strengths.

It is sometimes called ready made concrete because our team does all the leg work. It has never been easier to source premium quality materials.

Ready made concrete goes into construction sites all over the country. It is good for residential slabs, pavements, industrial buildings, and bridges.

How much does ready mix concrete cost?

If you search for ‘the cost of ready made concrete’ our name will pop up. Contractors all over Chelmsford use our service because they never pay above the odds.

We only charge for the exact number of cubic metres you need and our prices start from £100 per metre.

All our materials are of premium quality. We source screed, lean, gravel, sand, and cement for our contractors. Because we buy in bulk, you save money. Our customers do not have to waste valuable time running around sourcing materials.

How do you measure the strength of concrete?

Contractors must understand what strength concrete they need. If they order the wrong strength, they cannot fulfil their project requirements.

It is important to measure the strength of concrete to ensure it is fit for its purpose. Lots of suppliers conduct compression tests. They are one of the most reliable ways of measuring strength.

Suppliers take samples of existing batches and place them in a compression machine. The machine compresses the sample and measures the strength in pounds per square inch (psi).

If you are ever in doubt about the safest strength for each job, contact your engineers. Our contractors need strengths between 15 MPa (2200 psi) and 30 MPa (4400 psi).

Are there quality standards for concrete?

We always keep our eye on the latest innovations in the industry. It is important to stay up to date on quality standards. Our standards begin when we source lean, screed, cement, gravel, sand, and stone.

We perform quality standards at our batching plant. Each batch of ready mix concrete undergoes density, moisture, and void tests to make sure they meet our high standards.

Our team are always happy to talk about quality standards. Give us a call on 01992 635454 to talk about your concerns.

Concrete can become difficult to work with for many reasons.

  • If ready mix concrete is left for too long it will be less pliable
  • If concrete is subject to harsh weather conditions it will contain defects

What is the difference between concrete and cement?

Both are common construction site materials. They are often mistaken for each other. Cement combines with sand, water, and gravel to create ready mix concrete.

Cement is an important part of concrete because it speeds up the hardening process.

Contractors all over Chelmsford, Essex, and North London use ready mix concrete. It is good for residential slabs, bridges, pavements, industrial buildings, and many more construction projects.

How do you measure concrete?

In the construction industry, volumetric ready mix concrete is measured by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.

Does concrete gain strength by drying out?

A chemical process called hydration reduces the amount of moisture in ready mix concrete. This type of concrete contains cement, gravel, sand, and water. Water is the last element added to the mixture.

When water combines with the other essential materials, hydration begins. Water molecules collide with sand, gravel, and cement molecules. They bond together and crystalise.

Hydration mostly happens in the first month after you lay the concrete. As more hydration occurs, water molecules lock into bonds and there is less moisture left in the concrete. Hydration can happen for months and years afterwards if moisture seeps into the concrete.

How long does it take for concrete to cure?

Curing ready mix concrete requires a long list of external controls. Curing is sometimes mistaken for drying, which relies on a chemical reaction called hydration.

To cure, concrete must be protected from harsh weather conditions like snow, wind, and heat. They can slow down the hardening process and cause defects.

Contractors must:

  • Maintain a heat of over 50 degrees for 3 to 14 days
  • Maintain relative humidity above 80%

In most cases, concrete will be completely cured after 28 days. If you want more specific information, always speak to your contractors and engineers.

What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?

We supply ready mix concrete to contractors all over Chelmsford and Essex. Concrete is one of the most common construction materials in the world. This type of concrete goes into industrial buildings, pavements, and large bridges.

Our contractors always contact their engineers for tailored advice. We can only speak about general situations. Most of our contractors use C35 and above mixes for residential slabs.

One benefit of ordering our volumetric concrete trucks is that they have separate compartments. This means you can order lots of different grades and strengths in the same time slot.

Why is my concrete cracking already?

Concrete is prone to cracks. It shrinks an average of an ⅛ of an inch for every 20 feet due to a process called hydration.

Hydration is a chemical process that occurs when water molecules combine with sand, gravel, and cement. The materials combine together and crystalise. New bonds form, and the amount of moisture left in the mixture reduces.

Hydration happens for months and years after the concrete has been laid if moisture is still present. It causes concrete to expand, contract, and crack.

Poor construction practices increase the likelihood of cracks.

  • Adding excess water to ready mix concrete makes it more pliable but also increases hydration
  • Working on the surface of ready mix concrete before it has cured causes defects

If you want to reduce the impact of contractions, add expansion joints to your mixture. We recommend adding one joint for every three metres of concrete.

What is screed?

Screed is a common construction material. You will find our concrete screed on all sorts of residential and commercial sites across Chelmsford.

We are known for producing high-quality, spreadable screed. We can make your mixture even more spreadable by reducing the size of the sand. Our customers can request pieces of sand that range from dust to 10mm.

What should I use screed for?

So, how do our customers use floor screeding?

There are three main applications for screed.

  • Screed is an even base for flooring options like tiles, carpets, and linoleum.
  • Screed is a level layer that evens out the imperfections on the surface of subfloors. It is not unusual for contractors to put a layer of screed on top of their concrete subfloor.
  • Screed is an affordable layer of insulation for underfloor heating pipes.

Differences between concrete floors and screed floors

Both these products contain water, sand, and cement. We also add 20mm pieces of gravel to the concrete.

Concrete floors have load-bearing properties. Concrete can support massive structures, which is why it is also perfect for beams and walls.

Screed floors do not have load-bearing properties. Reinforced screed can hold heavier weights than traditional screed, but neither is designed to support the same structures as concrete. Screed is designed to create thin, even layers.

Types of floor screed

We only sell two types of screed.

We make traditional screed from water, cement, and sand. You can customise the size of the sand to get the perfect consistency. No matter how big the sand pieces are, traditional screed is easy to spread.

To create reinforced screed, we just add metal mesh fibres. The biggest benefits of reinforced screed are that it is less likely to shrink and crack when it dries.

Please note that we do not sell liquid floor screed

How to screed a floor?

HH Muckers’ floor screeding is exceptionally easy to work with. You can make the mixture even more pliable by requesting smaller pieces of sand.

To make the process as easy as possible, we recommend buying a screed float. This tool features a handle and a flat edge. Just pour your screed and run the edge across the top of it.

If the screed float leaves indentations in your screed, you need to buy a carborundum stone. This will remove any indentations and leave your screed looking smooth.

How do I cure screed?

Curing allows materials to reach their maximum strength. Screed floors need to cure, but they face a lot of obstacles. Humidity, heat, and the type of screed can all have an impact on the time it takes for your screed to cure.

In general, screed cures by 65% within a week.

How long does screed take to dry?

On average, screed dries at a rate of 1mm per day. This can change depending on the type of screed, the environment, and the thickness of the layer. Layers thicker than 50mm can take an extra day to dry per 1mm over 50mm. For example, if a layer is 90mm thick it could take anywhere from 90 to 130 days to dry.
