What is screed used for?

Types of floor screed

We stock two main types of screed, but we can adjust the size of the sand in each. 

  • Traditional floor screed: You will have probably heard of this kind of screed. It is thin, workable, and smooth. It goes on top of concrete subfloors and underneath carpets and tiles. 
  • Reinforced screed: Reinforced screed is the next step up. It contains all the same materials, but we also add metal mesh fibres. The fibres strengthen the overall mixture, which lowers the chance of cracks and even shrinkage. 

How to screed a floor?

Floor screeding is very common and easy to do. You do not need expensive, technical tools to screed a floor. Just buy a trowel and use the flat surface to smooth out any imperfections. 

You might notice trowel marks on the top of your screed. For a perfect finish, buy a carborundum stone. You can buy these stones with handles already attached. Just grab the handle and run the stone over the top of your screed.

How do I cure screed?

You need to account for cure time when you create screed floors.

There is no way to predict how long your screed layer will take to cure, but we can give you a few guidelines. 

  • Screed should cure by 65% in a week. 
  • If the temperature is lower than 10ºC, your screed will take longer to cure. 
  • The type of screed can impact the cure time. 

How long does screed take to dry?

Concrete screed can take a while to dry. The thickness of the screed and the room temperatures dictate how long it will take. 

If the layer is between 1mm and 50mm, it will take one day per 1mm to dry. If the layer is 50mm+ thick, it will take anywhere from one to two days to dry per 1mm.
