How do you measure the strength of concrete?
Contractors must order the correct strength for their construction site. If they order the wrong strength, they will not be able to fulfil their project requirements.
Scientists measure the strength of ready mix concrete with compression tests. They take cylindrical samples of existing batches of concrete. These samples go into compression equipment.
The equipment measures the strength in pounds per square inch (psi).
The strength of concrete depends on a lot of factors. One of the biggest ways to ensure strength is to use high-quality materials.
Are there quality standards for concrete?
It is important to regulate concrete. Ready mix concrete goes into all sorts of construction projects. Contractors in Edmonton use this type of concrete in industrial buildings.
The construction industry is subject to a lot of rules and regulations.
At HH Muckers, quality standards are at the top of our list. We conduct density, void, and temperature checks on each batch of ready mix concrete. This ensures that our customers receive premium quality batches that meet industry regulations.

How long do I have to place and finish ready mix concrete?
There is no definitive answer to this question. Ready mix concrete is a versatile material and every construction site is different.
Concrete does not react well to the elements. Contractors must protect their batch from immense heat and rain.
One of the most important factors to think about is time. If ready mix concrete is left for too long it will become less pliable. With our guaranteed time slots, contractors can arrange their working day.
We always warn our customers not to work on the surface of concrete before it cures. Doing so can cause structural defects.
What is the difference between concrete and cement?
Cement and concrete are often mistaken for each other. Both are common construction materials that go into a wide range of projects.
Cement is an important part of ready mix concrete. It mixes with sand, water, and gravel and functions as the hardening agent. It looks like a grey powder when it is dry and a thick paste when it combines with water.
We deliver ready mix concrete to contractors all over Edmonton. They use it in commercial, industrial, and residential projects.
How do you measure concrete?
In the construction industry, volumetric ready mix concrete is measured by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.
Does concrete gain strength by drying out?
Ready mix concrete begins to dry when hydration happens.
Hydration is a chemical process. It begins when water combines with sand, stone, and cement. The water molecules collide with the other molecules in the mixture.
Bonds form and crystalise. The new strong bonds force the molecules in the mixture closer together. As new bonds form, moisture disappears from the mixture.
Hydration happens whenever moisture is present. Hydration mostly happens in the first month after labourers lay the concrete. It can happen for months and years afterwards.
How long does it take for concrete to cure?
Concrete dries and cures at different rates.
To dry concrete, contractors have to add the correct amount of water. To cure concrete, contractors must consider lots of different external factors.
Here are some of the most important external controls.
- Heat – concrete cures in an environment that is over 50 degrees
- Time – contractors have to maintain an environment over 50 degrees for 3 to 14 days
- Humidity – site managers must keep relative humidity above 80%
Most batches of ready mix concrete will cure after 28 days.
If you need tailored curing advice, consult with your engineers.
What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?
Our Edmonton based contractors use C35 and above mixes for residential slabs.
Ready mix concrete goes into lots of different projects. Industrial buildings, commercial properties, and pavements all benefit from ready made concrete. This type of concrete is known for being strong and durable.
Our volumetric concrete trucks come with different compartments. They can carry many concrete grades and strengths at the same time. This is one of the main benefits of booking a delivery slot with us.
Why is my concrete cracking already?
All types of concrete cracks. Ready mix concrete is no different.
Concrete shrinks on average an ⅛ of an inch for every 20 feet. This is why cracks are more apparent in large scale industrial and commercial projects.
Hydration is a chemical process that occurs when water molecules collide with sand, stone, and cement molecules. The molecules bond and there is less moisture left in the mixture.
Hydration happens whenever there are unbonded water molecules in the mixture. It makes concrete expand, contract, and crack.
Contractors can prevent cracks in a number of ways. It is important to only add the exact amount of water necessary to ready mix concrete. The more water in the mixture, the easier concrete is to work with. More water also increases hydration.
We warn contractors against working on the surface of concrete before it cures. Doing so causes structural defects and increases the likelihood of cracks.
For strong slabs, add one expansion joint to every three metres of concrete.

What is screed?
Screed is a thin, practical material.
It is made from a mixture of sand, cement, and water. Our traditional batches contain very fine pieces of sand. HH Muckers’ floor screed is very workable. You can spread and smooth massive amounts of our screed with just a trowel.
We also sell batches of screed that contain bigger bits of sand. You can order anything from 6 to 10mm pieces of sand.
What is screed used for?
Our customers order floor screeding to create thin layers. Screed can act as a base for a range of floor options including carpet, lino, and tiles.
It is not uncommon for contractors to pour a layer of screed on top of a concrete sub base. Concrete is one of the most popular building materials in the world, but it does not always have an even finish. Screed is the perfect solution.
Screed always goes into floors. Our customers pour screed over underfloor heating pipes. This has a dual purpose: it insulates the pipes and creates a smooth base for further flooring.
What is the difference between screed and concrete?
Both screed and concrete contain water, cement, and sand. We also add 20mm pieces of gravel to our cement, which makes the mixture much thicker. On average, screed is much more workable than cement.
Screed floors are nowhere near as strong as concrete floors. Concrete has brilliant load-bearing qualities, so much so that it can even create pillars. It can hold massive loads, whereas screed is only good for thin layers. You should never put very heavy loads on top of screed.

Types of floor screed
We stock two main types of screed, but we can adjust the size of the sand in each.
- Traditional floor screed: You will have probably heard of this kind of screed. It is thin, workable, and smooth. It goes on top of concrete subfloors and underneath carpets and tiles.
- Reinforced screed: Reinforced screed is the next step up. It contains all the same materials, but we also add metal mesh fibres. The fibres strengthen the overall mixture, which lowers the chance of cracks and even shrinkage.
How to screed a floor?
Floor screeding is very common and easy to do. You do not need expensive, technical tools to screed a floor. Just buy a trowel and use the flat surface to smooth out any imperfections.
You might notice trowel marks on the top of your screed. For a perfect finish, buy a carborundum stone. You can buy these stones with handles already attached. Just grab the handle and run the stone over the top of your screed.
How do I cure screed?
You need to account for cure time when you create screed floors.
There is no way to predict how long your screed layer will take to cure, but we can give you a few guidelines.
- Screed should cure by 65% in a week.
- If the temperature is lower than 10ºC, your screed will take longer to cure.
- The type of screed can impact the cure time.
How long does screed take to dry?
Concrete screed can take a while to dry. The thickness of the screed and the room temperatures dictate how long it will take.
If the layer is between 1mm and 50mm, it will take one day per 1mm to dry. If the layer is 50mm+ thick, it will take anywhere from one to two days to dry per 1mm.
Can I cancel my order?
We accept cancellations up to 24 hours before the initial ready mix concrete delivery slot.
