What is ready mix concrete?

Ready mix concrete is one of the most common construction materials in the UK. It is a combination of sand, gravel, water, and cement.

Customers and suppliers alike sometimes refer to it as ready made concrete. This name reflects the product’s hassle-free nature. Contractors love the fact that we source and deliver all the necessary materials for them.

Ready made concrete is good for site managers that need lots of grades and strengths. Our volumetric concrete trucks contain separate compartments. We can deliver several grades in the same time slot.

We take all the precautions necessary to ensure our customers get premium quality materials.

How much does ready mix concrete cost?

Our prices start from £80 per cubic metre. By selling concrete per metre, we reduce wastage. Contractors never have to pay for more than they need with our pricing structure.

Each cubic metre includes premium quality cement, sand, stone, and aggregates.

How do you measure the strength of concrete?

Suppliers can ensure their concrete is safe to use by measuring the strength. It is important to create and deliver concrete that is fit for its purpose.

One of the easiest ways of creating strong concrete is by using premium quality materials. All our materials undergo void, density, and moisture tests so we can double-check they are high-quality.

Scientists use specialist compression equipment to measure the strength of concrete. They conduct compression tests by placing cylindrical samples of concrete into the machine. The machine measures the strength in pounds per square inch (psi).

Are there quality standards for concrete?

There are lots of quality standards for concrete. We pride ourselves on keeping up with the latest rules and regulations. When you order a ready mix concrete delivery from us, you can expect premium batches that meet quality standards.

We supply contractors with sand, stone, cement, gravel, and other aggregates. Each material goes through our quality processes. We conduct void, moisture, and density tests on each material we stock.

Give us a call on 01992 635454 to learn more about our quality standards.

How long do I have to place and finish ready mix concrete?

The amount of time you have to place concrete depends on many factors.

  • Ready mix concrete becomes more difficult to work with when it is exposed to harsh weather conditions.
  • Contractors should not work on the surface of ready mix concrete before it is dry. Doing so can cause structural defects.

We recommend working as soon as our volumetric concrete trucks arrive on-site. Our time slots make it easier than ever to arrange labour.

Site managers love the fact that they can reduce their expenses with our guaranteed deliveries.

What is the difference between concrete and cement?

Concrete is one of the most common construction materials in the world. Cement combines with sand, gravel, and water to create ready mix concrete.

Cement functions as the hardening agent in the mixture. Without cement, concrete would not be able to harden and cure. It looks like a grey powder when dry and a thick mortar paste when wet.

Portland and Asphalt are two of the most common types of cement in the industry. They go into residential slabs, industrial buildings, and large scale construction sites all over Haringey.

How do you measure concrete?

We measure ready mix concrete by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.

Does concrete gain strength by drying out?

Concrete gains strength through a chemical process called hydration.

Water is the last material added to sand, gravel, and cement to create ready mix concrete. When water molecules collide with the other molecules in the mixture, bonds form and crystalise.

When bonds form between water and the other materials there is less moisture in the mixture. The existing bonds crowd together, and concrete begins to shrink and harden.

Hydration happens whenever free water molecules are present in concrete. This chemical reaction mostly occurs in the first month after labourers lay the concrete. It can also happen for months and years afterwards.

How long does it take for concrete to cure?

In general, ready mix concrete will cure after 28 days.

Curing requires external controls. Unlike the drying process which can be left alone, curing needs intervention. There are a few factors that contractors have to consider when curing concrete.

  • The relative humidity must stay above 80%
  • The heat must stay over 50 degrees for 3 to 14 days

The number of days that you have to maintain an environment over 50 degrees varies. Each project is different and requires a different set of controls. For more specific information, always consult with your engineers.

What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?

Our Haringey based contractors use C35 and above mixes for residential slabs.

Contractors all over North London use our ready mix concrete services. We can make all sorts of concrete grades and strengths. Each volumetric concrete truck in our fleet has separate compartments for different materials.

We pride ourselves on tailoring each order to our customers’ specifications.

Why is my concrete cracking already?

All types of concrete cracks. Concrete is subject to cracks because of a process called hydration.

When water molecules collide and bond with sand, gravel, and cement molecules, hydration occurs. As more bonds form, there is less moisture in the mixture.

When there is less moisture, the bonds crowd together and the mixture hardens. This causes it to expand, contract, and shrink. Ready mix concrete shrinks on average a 1/8th of an inch for every 20 feet.

Labourers can reduce the likelihood of cracks by following these steps.

  • Only add an exact amount of water to the mixture. Adding more increases the change of hydration, expansion, and contraction.
  • Never work on concrete before it cures. Doing so creates structural defects that cause problems when concrete begins to expand and contract.
  • Add one expansion joint to every three metres of concrete. This reduces the amount of space available for contraction and gives the mixture a structure.

What is screed?

Screed is a thin, simple material. We mix cement, water, and sand together to create premium-quality floor screed. In typical mixtures, the pieces of sand are very small. This is what makes the mixture so easy to work with. We also create batches that have pieces of sand that are anywhere from 6mm to 10mm.

Bigger pieces of sand are better for large construction projects. Smaller pieces of sand are more common for residential projects.

Screed floor applications

Screed has lots of applications.

HH Muckers’ screed goes into all kinds of construction projects across Haringey. Contractors buy this product when they need to create thin, smooth surfaces. Screed floors typically sit on top of concrete subfloors. Concrete tends to create bumpy surfaces, so contractors need to smooth them out. Screed is an affordable, simple solution.

Contractors also pour a layer of screed before they lay carpet, tiles, and other floors. Again, screed creates a smooth, blemish-free base for further structures.

Some of our customers use screed to insulate underfloor heating pipes. This improves the efficiency of the pipes, reduces heating costs, and creates smooth surfaces.

Are concrete and screed different?

Concrete and screed are different materials.

We make concrete by mixing cement, sand, water, and gravel. Concrete is known for its load-bearing qualities. It can hold some of the heaviest structures around.

We make floor screeding by mixing cement, sand, and water. It is known for being a thin, easily workable material. It creates thin, blemish-free surfaces.

Types of floor screed

You can rely on us for the most common types of floor screed

Traditional floor screed We mix sand, cement, and water to create this type of screed. The pieces of sand can range anywhere from dust to 10mm. Contractors buy this type of screed when they need to create thin, smooth surfaces.

Reinforced screed – We add metal mesh fibres to our traditional mixture to create batches of reinforced screed. This product is much stronger than traditional screed. It is far less likely to crack and shrink.

Still unsure about which product to order? Give our team a call and they will advise you.

How to screed a floor?

Screed floors are one of the simpler construction structures that you can make.

  1. Pour the screed into place.
  2. Use a screed float* to smooth out the surface.
  3. Use a carborundum stone to buff out any marks left by the screed float.

*Screed floats are also called trowels. You can buy this tool from any major construction supply shop.

How do I cure screed?

To cure screed, all you need is time.

Floor screeding achieves 65% of its overall strength in just a week. It will take longer to reach 100% of its strength. The time it takes depends on lots of factors. Heat, humidity, and the type of screed can all have an impact.

One of the ways you can speed up the process is by using a polythene sheet. Make sure that the sheet is airtight.

How long does screed take to dry?

Concrete screed dries at a rate of 1mm each day. If your layer of screed is over 50mm, it will take longer. For example, a layer of screed that is 100mm thick will take anywhere from 100 to 150 days to dry.

Can I cancel my order?
