Ready mix concrete is a combination of cement, sand, gravel, and water.
Some contractors call it ready made concrete. This name reflects how easy it is for contractors to source all the materials they need. We source the materials, pack them, and deliver them to sites around North London.
Concrete goes into lots of different construction projects. Without concrete, site managers would not be able to create day-to-day structures that the general public depend on.

How do you measure the strength of concrete?
Contractors know how important it is to use hardy, durable concrete in their construction projects. If they do not purchase the correct strength ready mix concrete their structures will crumble.
Scientists measure the strength of concrete with specialist compression equipment. They break off pieces of concrete from existing batches. The machine compresses the samples and measures the strength in newtons per square metre (N/m^2) or kilograms per square centimetre (kg/cm^2).
Are there quality standards for concrete?
When it comes to construction projects, contractors need a ready mix concrete supplier who enforces quality standards. Concrete goes into lots of day-to-day structures. Poor quality materials will result in unsafe structures.
Our quality processes start at our batching plant. We conduct void, density, and moisture tests on ready mix concrete materials to ensure they meet our high standards. We never send out materials that are of low quality.
To learn more about quality procedures, call our North London team on 01992 635454.
How long do I have to place and finish the concrete?
We always recommend working with concrete as soon as it arrives.
Our guaranteed time slots make placing and finishing ready mix concrete easier than ever. Contractors can book a time slot that coincides with the start of their working day.
It is important to remember that changing weather conditions can impact the pliability of concrete. Harsh winds and immense heat can make concrete difficult to work with. Site managers should protect their batches from the elements wherever possible.
What is the difference between concrete and cement?
When it comes to construction projects, cement and concrete are both important and materials. Without them, construction workers would not be able to create the day-to-day structures that we depend on.
Cement and concrete are hardy and durable. Cement is the hardening agent inside concrete. It looks like a grey powder when it is dry. When it combines with water, gravel, and sand it turns into a thick mortar paste. These four materials combine to create ready mix concrete.
We use Asphalt cement and Portland cement because they are the strongest types. Contractors all over North London order ready mix concrete from us. They know they are getting materials that will stand the test of time.
How do you measure concrete?
We adhere to the industry standard and measure concrete in cubic metres. One cubic metre weighs around 2.4T/m3.
Does concrete gain strength by drying out?
A process called hydration makes concrete stronger.
Hydration occurs when water molecules react with sand, gravel, and cement molecules. The bonds crystalise and sturdy chemical structures form. The bonds crowd together and ready mix concrete shrinks and begins to dry.
Water is always present in ready mix concrete, but it is locked into hardy compounds. Water can seep into concrete months and years after construction workers place and lay it. When water seeps in, the hydration process begins again.
How long does it take for concrete to cure?
The amount of time it takes for a batch of ready mix concrete to cure depends on lots of different factors. Most batches will cure within 28 days in perfect conditions. Weather conditions, the quality of the raw materials, and moisture are important factors.
Curing concrete is more complicated than drying concrete. The drying process depends on an internal chemical reaction. In contrast, curing concrete needs external controls.
Labourers have to put in place the following controls to cure concrete.
- Create an environment that has over 80% humidity
- Create an environment that is above 50 degrees for 3 to 14 days
Call our North London team on 01992 635454 to learn more about curing concrete.
What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?
We always tell contractors to speak to their engineers about the best concrete strengths for their project. They can provide specific information about each project.
Our team can only talk about general situations. Contractors who work on residential projects usually order C35 and above mixes for slabs. Please note that our advice is for general estimates only.
Why is my concrete cracking already?
Cracks are a normal part of ready mix concrete’s lifecycle.
Hydration causes cracks to form. When water molecules combine with sand, gravel, and cement molecules, bonds form. They crystalise and harden. The concrete shrinks and becomes stronger.
Hydration happens whenever there are water molecules present in the mixture. Over time, water seeps into concrete and the chemical process begins again. Hydration causes concrete to expand and contract, which makes cracks appear.
Labourers can decrease the likelihood of cracks in the following ways.
- Add an expansion joint to concrete every 3 metres whilst laying it.
- Only add the exact amount of water necessary to your concrete. If there is too much moisture left in your ready mix concrete, the likelihood of cracks increases.

What is screed?
Screed is a simple yet effective construction material. HH Muckers’ floor screed only contains water, sand, and cement. For the sand, you can choose from a range of sizes. Our traditional screed contains fine pieces of sand. Our other batches contain sand that ranges from 6 to 10mm.
Concrete screed is an excellent choice because it is very pliable. It is one of the easiest building materials to work with.
What is screed used for?
Screed makes brilliant layers. Contractors spread our floor screeding into thin layers and smooth out the surface. Above all, screed is excellent for contractors who need to create even surfaces.
Even, blemish-free surfaces are necessary for floors. We recommend pouring a layer of screed before laying carpets, tiles, and linoleum.
Our customers pour screed over concrete sub bases. Concrete makes great bases, but the surface is usually uneven. A thin layer of screed is all you need to improve concrete subfloors.
Some people use screed to reduce their home heating costs. You can pour screed over underfloor heating pipes to insulate them.

Differences between concrete and screed
Concrete and screed are alike, but there are a few key differences.
Both products contain sand, water, and cement. We also add 20mm gravel to our concrete. The gravel makes all the difference. Our concrete is thick and has excellent load-bearing abilities. Contractors buy it to create strong subfloors, pillars, and other load-bearing structures. In contrast, screed is thin and smooth. Contractors buy it to create blemish-free screed floors.

Types of floor screed
Before you place an order, make sure you have chosen the right type of screed.
- Traditional floor screed – Do you need smooth surfaces and clean lines? Traditional screed is perfect for your project. Pour this type of screed over concrete subfloors or let it stand alone as a base for carpets and tiles.
- Reinforced screed – Do you need a stronger version of traditional screed? Reinforced screed contains all the usual materials as well as metal mesh fibres. The fibres reduce the chance of shrinkage and cracking.
Still not sure? Just ask our team.
How to screed a floor?
HH Muckers floor screeding is an easy, workable material. To manipulate screed, all you need is a trowel. Trowels are also known as screed floats. They are simple tools that feature a handle and a flat side.
Just run the flat side over the top of your screed. You will have a thin, blemish-free layer in no time.
More often than not, you will see a few trowel marks on the surface. The best thing you can do is buy a carborundum stone. It will remove the trowel marks and create a blemish-free surface.
How do I cure screed?
You need to leave time for screed floors to cure. When screed cures, it reaches its potential in terms of strength. It should reach over 50%+ of its strength in a week or so. In most cases, a week is enough for screed to reach 65% of its overall strength.
Curing is a delicate job. It relies on lots of details, including the humidity and heat in the room. If the environment is colder than 10ºC, screed struggles to cure to its full potential.
How long does screed take to dry?
Concrete screed needs to cure and dry.
Here are some guidelines.
- Floors that are 1 to 50mm thick need 1 day for each 1mm.
- Floors that are 50mm+ need 1-2 days for each 1mm.
Can I cancel my order?
We understand that external conditions like adverse weather can put a stop to construction work. We are willing to accommodate cancellations up to 24 hours before the initial delivery slot.
