What are the benefits of a volumetric concrete truck?
Volumetric concrete is different from other types because it is measured by the volume of the material.
Volumetric concrete trucks carry all the ingredients of ready mix concrete. Our contractors tell us what strengths and ratios they need when ordering.
At the batching plant, our team pre-pack the lorries to your specifications. There are separate compartments for different materials.
Whilst on-site, our drivers mix the raw ingredients with water. An Archimedes’ screw system pushes the ready mix concrete to the mouth of the truck.
Each volumetric concrete truck in our fleet is:
- Brand-new
- Fully licensed
- Able to carry stone, sand, lean, screed, cement, ballast, and water
- Designed to navigate across difficult terrain
- Available for 24/7 deliveries
When you book a volumetric concrete truck from us, you do not have to wait around. We are available for same-day and next day deliveries.
How our volumetric concrete mixers work

Our volumetric concrete trucks are brand new and fully licensed. They come complete with an in-built mixer on the back.
When one of our trucks arrives on-site, it mixes the materials to your specifications. One of the benefits of these mixers is that they can mix lots of concrete grades and strengths at once.
Our concrete batching plant can mix up to 1m³ of concrete per minute and the trucks can mix 1 to 10 cubic metres of concrete on each visit.

How do you measure the strength of concrete?
Compressive strength tests are the only way to measure the strength of concrete.
Scientists take a sample from the batch and put it in a specialist compression machine. It measures the results in newtons per square meter (N/m^2) or kilograms per square centimetre (kg/cm^2).
If you want to improve the strength of your concrete, speak to our team on 01992 635454. We source premium quality lean, screed, cement, and aggregates for contractors in Stevenage.
Are there quality standards for concrete?
At HH Muckers, we know how important it is to adhere to industry standards.
Cement is the most important ingredient inside ready mix concrete. It helps harden the mixture and form a hardy aggregate.
Portland cement and asphalt cement are two of the most popular types. We create both with a process called inter-grinding at our batching plant.
We adhere to strict quality standards and industry safety guidelines.

How long do I have to place and finish the concrete?

Residential, industrial, and commercial projects all require different timeframes.
Weather conditions like harsh winds and immense heat can halt your progress.
Our clients love the fact that we offer time slots. When you know exactly what time your ready mix concrete delivery will arrive, it is easier to plan ahead.
We recommend beginning work as soon as our volumetric concrete lorry arrives on-site.
What is the difference between concrete and cement?
Concrete is a mixture of pastes and aggregates, one of them being cement. When dry, cement looks like a grey powder. When mixed with water it is a thick mortar paste.
There are several types of concrete, including ready mix concrete. It is ideal for residential properties, bridges, and walkways.
Asphalt cement and portland cement are two of the most commonly used types. They play essential roles in the hardening process.
How do you measure concrete?
We measure ready mix concrete by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.
Does concrete gain strength by drying out?
A process called hydration occurs when water mixes with cement, stone, and sand.
Water molecules form bonds with chemicals inside the other materials. They crystalise, aggregate, and create a sturdy mixture.
When the water locks into bonds, your batch of ready mix concrete will begin to dry.
Hydration primarily occurs in the first month after the mixture has set. If water is still present, hydration can take place months and years into the future.
How long does it take for concrete to cure?
Curing is a more complicated process. To get the curing process correct, contractors must control time, temperature, and moisture. Harsh heat, immense winds, and icy frost can impact the curing process.
It is important to achieve a relative humidity of more than 80%. You must also maintain a temperature of more than 50 degrees for 3 to 14 days. The number of days varies on a case to case basis.

What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?
Every project is different. We can only provide general advice about different types of concrete.
Our Stevenage based contractors use C35 grade strength ready made concrete batches for residential slabs.
If you want more specific advice, speak to your contractors and engineers.
Our team are always happy to talk about general grades. Call us on 01992 635454 for more information.
Why is my concrete cracking already?
When your concrete starts to crack, there is no need to panic.
Ready mix concrete shrinks when hydration takes place. It shrinks an average of an ⅛ of an inch every 20 feet. This means that large projects can often result in a lot of cracks.
Although cracks are part of the natural drying process, you can minimise the chance of them.
- Do not work on the surface of the ready mix concrete before it has cured. Doing so can cause defects and halt the hardening process.
- Only use as much water as necessary. Adding more can cause excess hydration, which encourages the mixture to expand and contract.
- Add an expansion joint every 3 to 3.5 metres. Doing so will reduce the space available for shrinkage.

What is screed?
Screed is a simple construction material. We mix water, cement, and sand to create floor screed. The sand pieces are typically tiny, but we also sell screed that contains bigger pieces of sand. The smaller the pieces, the more workable the mixture is. The more workable the mixture, the easier it is to spread.
Call 01992 635454 to book your screed delivery.
What is screed used for?
HH Muckers’ concrete screed is for floors.
Contractors use this product in a number of ways. In all cases, they spread it out to create thin, even layers. It is common to put a layer of screed on top of concrete sub bases.
Screed is also a good base for floors. Lots of our customers create a layer of screed before they place tiles, lino, and carpet. One of the biggest benefits of screed is that it creates even surfaces. This makes it an excellent base for other structures.
Some of our customers even use floor screeding to improve their home heating systems. You can pour screed over floor insulation pipes.
What is the difference between concrete and screed?
Even though these products share a lot of the same materials, they are not the same. Both contain cement, sand, and water. Our concrete also contains 20mm gravel.
Screed floors typically go over the top of concrete floors. Concrete sub bases have excellent load-bearing qualities. These sub bases do not usually have even surfaces, which is where screed comes in. HH Muckers’ screed creates even surfaces for floors.

Different types of floor screed
When it comes to screed floors, you need to understand the difference between reinforced and traditional screed.
Traditional screed is the most common type. Contractors pour this kind of screed into a thin layer to create smooth surfaces. It is an ideal base for carpets, tiles, and other floors.
Reinforced screed is far stronger. We add metal mesh fibres to water, cement, and sand to create this version. It is far less likely to shrink and crack during the drying process. If you need to build heavy structures, you should buy this kind of screed.
How to screed a floor?
HH Muckers’ floor screed is very pliable. The smaller the pieces of sand, the more workable the product is.
That being said, there are a few simple steps you can follow to screed your floor. No matter which screed you have, you need a screed float. Screed floats are also known as trowels.
Once you have poured your screed, you need to level it. A simple screed float is all you need to create smooth, even surfaces.
You might see trowel marks on the surface of your screed. In this case, you need to buy a carborundum stone. This will buff out any imperfections. 99% of stones sold by retailers have an in-built handle, which makes the smoothing process much easier.
Can I cure screed?
Floor screeding needs time to cure. By giving your screed time to cure, you are allowing it to strengthen and solidify.
Screed should reach over 50% of its strength in a week. After a week, screed usually sits at 65% of its overall strength. This number is not exact, it depends on lots of factors. The environment, heat, and humidity all have an impact.
To speed up the process, you can put a polythene sheet over your screed floor.
How long do I have to wait for screed to dry?
Curing and drying are different processes.
In general, concrete screed dries at a rate of 1mm per day. A 50mm layer of screed should take 50 days to dry.
Anything above 50mm will take longer. You should add an extra half a day for each 1mm above 50mm. 75mm layers will dry in anywhere from 75 to 100 days.
Can I cancel my order?
Our contractors have the right to cancel their order 24 hours before it is due to arrive.
