  • Our trucks are available for same/next day deliveries
  • They have separate compartments for different materials
  • Difficult terrains are no problem

How our volumetric concrete mixers work

Our volumetric concrete trucks come with in-built mixers. They are good for site managers who need a lot of concrete at once. The mixers can create 1 to 10 cubic metres of concrete on every visit.

Contractors can customise their batch. They can order 5 cubic metres for a residential slab and 5 for an industrial structure.

When contractors come to us, there is no need for waste. Because we charge per cubic metre, they never have to dispose of excess materials.

What is ready mix concrete?

Ready mix concrete is one of the most popular types of concrete. It is a combination of sand, gravel, cement, and water. These durable materials create a strong mixture.

People in the industry sometimes call it ready made concrete. This name reflects the hassle-free nature of the material.

Site managers order ready mix concrete for large scale construction projects. They do not have to spend their time sourcing materials. Our trucks can also create 1 to 10 cubic metres of concrete per visit.

How much does ready mix concrete cost?

The cost of ready mix concrete varies based on the supplier. Some suppliers charge per cubic metre, whereas others charge per delivery.

Contractors trust us because we charge per cubic metre. Our customers never have to worry about paying over the odds. By sticking to a transparent pricing structure, we have kept hundreds of loyal customers.

Charging per cubic metre also means that we help to reduce waste. Contractors spend less money and have fewer metres of concrete to dispose of.

How do you measure the strength of concrete?

We are a ready mix concrete supplier that spans the whole of North London. Lots of different construction teams depend on us. Our staff know how important it is to create concrete that can fulfil its purpose.

One of the ways suppliers can measure the strength of concrete is with compression machines. They take cylindrical samples of existing batches of ready mix concrete. The samples go into the compression equipment, which measures strength in pounds per square inch.

We ensure we create high-quality ready mix concrete by conducting tests. Void, moisture, and density tests help us ensure that we create strong materials. Hundreds of contractors trust us to provide materials that get the job done.

How long do I have to place and finish ready mix concrete?

The amount of time that labourers have to place and finish concrete depends on the project.

Contractors should work as efficiently as possible when their batch of ready mix concrete arrives. If concrete is left for too long, it becomes harder to work with.

Concrete also becomes less pliable when it is subject to harsh weather conditions. Our time slots make it much easier for contractors to plan their day. They can avoid days and nights that have poor weather forecasts.

As long as you begin working as soon your batch arrives you will not come up against any problems.

What is the difference between concrete and cement?

Cement and concrete are often mistaken for each other. Both are construction materials that go into construction sites all over North London. Our contractors use concrete in all sorts of projects.

Cement functions as the hardening agent inside concrete. Without cement, concrete would not turn into a solid. It combines with sand, gravel, and water to create ready mix concrete.

There are lots of different types of cement. Portland and Asphalt are two of the most common types. They create durable concrete that gets the job done.

How do you measure concrete?

We measure ready mix concrete by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.

Does concrete gain strength by drying out?

Concrete gains strength when a process called hydration happens.

Hydration is a chemical process that happens when water molecules bond with sand, cement, and gravel molecules. The new bonds crystalise and become stronger.

At this point, there is less moisture in the mixture because the water molecules are in bonds.

Ready mix concrete begins to harden when there is less moisture in it. Hydration happens whenever there are unbonded water molecules in the mixture. It mostly happens in the first month after labourers lay concrete, but can happen for months afterwards.

How long does it take for concrete to cure?

Ready mix concrete cures at different rates depending on the project.

Concrete goes into residential slabs, bridges, industrial buildings, and many other projects. Contractors have to give their batch enough time to cure. If they work on concrete before it cures, they will create defects.

Most concrete will cure at the end of 28 days.

Curing concrete requires external controls. We recommend taking the following steps:

  • Create an environment that is over 50 degrees for anything from 3 to 14 days. The number of days depends on your project.
  • Create an environment where the relative humidity is above 80%.

What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?

Ready mix concrete is one of the most versatile materials in the construction industry. Our customers order all sorts of concrete strengths.

Wood Green contractors tend to use C35 and above mixes for residential slabs.

Over 95% of first-time customers return to us for extra deliveries. They know that we can deliver lots of different concrete grades and strengths in the same slot. This means that they can fulfil a range of projects.

For exact information about concrete strength, always speak to your engineers before ordering.

Why is my concrete cracking already?

Cracks always form in ready mix concrete. Concrete shrinks an average of a 1/8th of an inch for every 20 feet. This is why contractors notice cracks more in larger projects.

A chemical reaction called hydration causes ready mix concrete to crack. Hydration happens whenever there are unbonded water molecules in concrete. The molecules collide with sand, gravel, and cement molecules and bond with them.

This process causes concrete to shrink and harden. When water seeps into the mixture in the future, the process begins again.

Contractors can avoid excess cracks by only adding as much water to the mixture as necessary. Some labourers add more water to make the mixture easier to work with. Doing this might seem like a good idea, but it causes more hydration than necessary.

One of the most effective ways to reduce cracks in ready mix concrete is to add expansion joints. They give the mixture structure. We recommend one joint for every three metres of concrete.

Can you advise me on what type of concrete to order?

We supply contractors all over North London with premium quality ready mix concrete. Our customers use concrete in all sorts of projects. It is one of the most common construction materials in the industry.

Our team can only advise contractors about general situations. For more specific advice, contractors should always speak to their engineers.

What is screed?

It is a common building material.

The most popular floor screeds contain very small pieces of sand. We create a range of screeds that contain a sliding scale of sand pieces. Our construction customers buy batches that contain bigger pieces of sand. The biggest pieces of sand that we work with are 10mm.

Overall, screed is a thin, workable material.

What is screed used for?

Our customers use screed to create blemish-free, thin layers.

HH Muckers floor screeding creates smooth surfaces. A smooth layer of screed is just what you need to lay tiles, linoleum, and carpets.

It is not uncommon to put screed on top of concrete subfloors. Concrete is a great construction material, but it does not create smooth surfaces. Screed is an excellent addition to concrete bases.

A lesser-known use is for insulation pipes. If you pour screed over underfloor heating pipes, it will reduce the heat loss as well as your heating bills.

Contact our team on 01992 635454 to book a screed delivery.

Difference between screed and concrete?

So, what is the difference between screed and concrete floors?

Our concrete contains 20mm pieces of gravel, water, cement, and sand. The resulting mixture is thick, and nowhere near as workable as screed. Concrete floors hold heavy loads. They are better known as sub bases, and they can handle the weight of entire buildings.

Our screed contains water, cement, and sand. We can customise the size of the sand to suit your project. Screed floors are made to be thin and smooth. They act as blemish-free bases for further work.

Types of floor screed

There are a few main types of screed that we stock, but here are the most popular.

  • Traditional floor screed – This contains sand, water, and cement. It is popular because it creates thin, blemish-free layers. Everyone from residential to commercial customers buy traditional screed. More often than not, they pour it over concrete subfloors before laying carpet and tiles.
  • Reinforced screed – This contains sand, water, cement, and metal mesh fibres. The fibres reinforce the mixture and make it less likely to shrink. The mixture is also less likely to crack when it dries.

Please note that we can alter the size of the sand in each of these batches. We stock sand that ranges from dust to 10mm.

How to screed a floor?

Floor screeding might be easier than you think. Of course, you should always ask a professional to screed your floor. Professionals use screed floats, which are also known as trowels.

Trowels have a flat side and a handle. The flat side easily smooths out screed, even the batches that contain bigger pieces of sand.

The downside of trowels is that they might leave marks. Carborundum stones buff out any imperfections that trowels leave behind.

How do I cure screed?

For screed to reach its full strength, you have to let it cure. Curing screed does not require specialist equipment. If the conditions are correct, all you need is time and patience.

Screed floors achieve 65% of their final strength by day seven. It can take a few more days or weeks to cure in full. If the temperature in the room is below 10°C, the screed will struggle to cure properly.

How long does screed take to dry?

So, how long does it take concrete screed to dry?

Remember, concrete screed is just a name. Our screed does not contain any concrete.

Our screed dries at a rate of 1mm per day. Layers that are thicker than 50mm will take longer to dry. We recommend adding an extra day for each 1mm over 50mm. For example, layers that are 100mm thick might take 100 or 150 days to dry.

Can I cancel my order?

We accept cancellations up to 24 hours before the initial ready mix concrete delivery slot.
