Concrete screed in Hatfield
Differences between concrete and screed
Concrete is one of the most common construction materials in the UK. This strong material has excellent load-bearing qualities. The ingredients are simple, but there are lots of variations. HH Muckers' concrete contains 20mm gravel, water, sand, and cement. Concrete creates load-bearing structures like pillars and sub bases.
Screed is a separate building material. It is often mistaken for concrete because they share the same ingredients. Floor screed is made from gravel, water, and sand. The finer the pieces of sand, the more workable the mixture. Although screed can support heavy loads, it does not have the same load-bearing qualities as concrete.

Types of floor screed
Before you place an order, make sure you are getting the right product for your screed floor.
Floor screed
As the name suggests, floor screed is designed for application on floors. It can go on top of concrete slabs and under floorboards. You can use a trowel to create a smooth, seamless surface.
Reinforced screed
Reinforced screed is the strongest type that we offer. The finished product contains metal mesh fibres which reduce the chance of cracking and shrinkage.
Traditional screed
Traditional screed is ideal for people who need a smooth surface. This product is workable and pliable, meaning it is easy to mold to your specifications.

It is important to order ready mix concrete that fits your project requirements. Our clients work on important construction projects like bridges and industrial buildings. If they choose the wrong strength, they will not be able to meet safety standards.
Most ready mix concrete suppliers measure the strength of concrete with compression tests.
Scientists take a sample from an existing batch of ready mix concrete. They place the sample in a compression machine. It compresses the concrete and calculates the strength in megapascals (MPa).
Different construction sites need different concrete strengths. If you need specific information about strengths, speak to your engineers.
Most construction site managers order concrete strengths between 15MPa and 30 MPa.
The construction industry is regulated by lots of different quality standards.
Our clients build communal structures, bridges, and residential slabs. We stay ahead of the game when it comes to safety and quality standards.
We perform moisture, density, and void tests on ready mix concrete at our Cheshunt yard. These tests ensure that we meet our own high safety standards.

Concrete is one of the most common construction materials. It goes into residential slabs, bridges, and industrial buildings. Every project is different and requires separate external controls.
Time is one of the most important external controls for concrete. If you leave ready mix concrete for too long it will be difficult to handle. Adverse weather conditions can also impact concrete.
With our ready mix concrete delivery slots, it has never been easier to organise your work schedule. Contractors in Hatfield love the fact that they do not have to worry about missing deadlines.
We deliver concrete If your batch is ruined by bad weather or a previous supplier has let you down, give us a call.
Cement goes into ready mix concrete. It combines with sand, gravel, and water to create the most commonly used construction material in the world. Without cement, concrete would not be able to harden.
Cement looks like a grey powder when it is dry. When water mixes with it, it turns into a thick paste.
We measure ready mix concrete by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4 tonnes.
Hydration is an important part of the drying process. Without hydration, the essential elements of ready mix concrete would not bond.
Water is the last piece of the puzzle. When water mixes with sand, gravel, and cement, a chemical process called hydration begins. Water molecules collide with the other molecules in the mixture and form bonds.
These bonds crystallise and harden. There is less moisture in the mixture because it is locked into bonds.
Hydration occurs in the first month after the concrete has been laid. It can happen months and years afterwards if there is even a small amount of moisture in the concrete.
Concrete dries and cures at separate rates. They are two different processes. Whereas the drying process relies on a chemical reaction, curing needs external controls.
To cure ready mix concrete, contractors must consider how to best shield their batch from intense weather conditions. Harsh heat, immense winds, and icy colds can cause defects.
In most cases, concrete cures after 28 days. This number takes for granted that contractors follow the two steps listed below.
Contractors must:
- Create an environment of over 10°C for 3 to 14 days
- Create an environment of relative humidity above 80%
Each project is different. Always consult with your contractors and engineers for specific information.
Hatfield-based contractors use C35 and above mixes when working on a residential slab.
Contractors all over Hertfordshire choose us as their ready mix concrete supplier. As well as being transparent on prices, we tailor each batch to suit their needs. This means that you can order lots of concrete grades and strengths at once.
When you choose HH Muckers, you can get lots of construction projects done at the same time.
If you need exact grade and strength information, contact your engineers.
No matter what project you are working on your concrete will crack.
Ready mix concrete is no exception to this rule. Cracks are more apparent on large scale projects because they occur on average an 3mm for every 20 feet.
A chemical process called hydration causes concrete to dry. Hydration happens when water molecules are present in concrete.
It can occur for months and years after you lay the ready mix concrete. When hydration happens, it causes concrete to shrink and contract.
Cracks are normal, but a large number of cracks can cause a problem. Here are a few common construction mistakes that cause more cracks:
- Adding excess water to ready mix concrete. Doing this is tempting because it makes the mixture more pliable. We recommend only adding the amount of water necessary. Excess moisture causes defects and encourages hydration.
- Working on the surface of ready mix concrete before it has cured. Doing this causes defects and increases the likelihood of cracks.
You can reduce cracks by adding one expansion joint to your ready mix concrete every three metres. Adding joints gives your mixture structure which decreases the chance of cracks forming.

What is screed?
Screed is one of the most common construction materials in all of Hatfield. It is also known as concrete screed because it is often poured over concrete slabs.
HH Muckers' screed is thin and versatile. We sell screed that contains very fine pieces of sand. Other batches contain pieces of sand that range from 6 to 10mm. Finer pieces of sand are better for residential projects. Larger pieces of sand are more common on large-scale construction projects.
What is screed used for?
Screed floors are necessary for all kinds of construction projects. You can spread our screed in thin layers to create a strong surface for tiles, carpets, or any other floors. More often than not, screed goes on top of concrete sub bases.
Floor screeding makes an excellent top layer because it is easy to smooth out. Our screed is very workable, so it is easy to buff out imperfections.
Some people use screed to improve their home heating systems. You can pour screed on top of underfloor heating pipes to add extra insulation. This layer of screed can also function as a base layer for floor tiles.
How to screed a floor?
HH Muckers' concrete screed is very versatile. There are a few ways that you can use this product, but the application method is always the same.
We recommend using a screed float. Screed floats are also known as trowels. Each trowel has a rubber handle and a flat surface. Once the screed is in the right place, use the trowel. Guide the flat surface over the screed and watch the imperfections disappear.
If your screed still has imperfections, you need a carborundum stone. You can buy these stones online with handles that are pre-installed. Just run the stone over the screed floor. It will even remove any trowel marks.
How do I cure screed?
Like any floor, floor screed needs time to cure and set. By day seven, your floor should have reached 65% of its overall strength. It is difficult to predict how long it will take to reach 100% because it depends on lots of factors. Time, type of screed, and other conditions can have a massive impact.
You can increase the speed by using a polythene sheet. Put the airtight sheet over the top of your screed and wait.
How long does screed take to dry before tiling?
Floor screeding dries at a rate of 1mm each day.
Can I cancel my order?
We accept cancellations up to 24 hours before the initial delivery slot.
